Fish Fact File

Zone 2

Also known as Mexican walking fish, this is a salamander, an amphibian. The amphibians typically start out as aquatic larvae, and then the young generally undergo metamorphosis from larva with gills to an adult air-breathing form with lungs. However axolotls are unusual among amphibians, in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis: instead of developing lungs and taking to land, the adults remain aquatic and with gill.
