Summer School
Summer School program 2019: “ENDANGERED SPECIES”
Come to visit the Aquarium and offer your students a full journey to the Sea!
Endangered species are species which has been categorized as very likely to become extinct in the near future. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed more than 27,000 species as threatened with extinction. That is more than 27% of all assessed species.
Check below which activity is suitable for your students!
3-5 YEARS OLD – FEED THE SHARK!
About 3.2% of all the shark species existing in the world are endangered. Only in Malta 9 species of sharks are considered Endangered and protected by law.
This activity is tailored for the youngest visitors! And no… the shark you’re going to feed is not a real one!
Come and discover what it is about!
6- 8 YEARS OLD – I HAVE, WHO HAS…?
Each species has special features to adapt to their environment and living habits.
Ready for a challenging competition?
9-11 YEARS OLD – SEA TURTLE
Three species of marine turtle may be around Malta; the Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), the Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Nearly all the seven species of sea turtle existing in the world are classified as Endangered.
You can help them! Do you know what to do if you see a sea turtle in danger?
12 YEARS OLD ONWARDS – IUCN RED LIST
The IUCN Red List is a critical indicator of the health of the world’s biodiversity.
In much the same way as a barometer measures atmospheric pressure to help us prepare for adverse weather conditions, the IUCN Red List measures the pressures acting on species, which guides and informs conservation actions to help prevent extinctions. This is why the IUCN Red List is often referred to as a Barometer of Life.
The visit includes:
– Aquarium tour guided by our presenters
– Age-related workshops/activities
– break time in a designed area
