Spot the Jellyfish

The IOI KIDS Spot the Jellyfish initiative aims to increase awareness, especially amongst the younger generations, about the local diversity of jellyfish species, through a hands-on exercise involving the reporting of sightings of jellyfish that often swarm close to our shores and beaches.

In so doing the initiative would be supplying useful data for local marine scientists and tourist authorities, through a citizen science approach… and aid to avoid those stinging jellies!

On 9th June 2016 the Malta National Aquarium in collaboration with IOI KIDS organised an event to celebrate World Ocean’s Day. Year 4 students from Birkirkara Primary School were invited to the Aquarium to participate in a morning of marine education where they heard Prof Alan Deidun talk about the Spot the Jellyfish Campaign, toured the Aquarium and presented their projects of plastic pollution to the Agent President Dolores Cristina.

Students were chosen from Birkirkara Primary School since they were one of the mostly booked schools in 2016.
